RRR as Region's Digest

One of the major concerns of Russian science is how to propel its publications to the international scientific market. This problem is particularly challenging in social sciences. A radical answer is to release English versions of scientific journals, which is exceedingly difficult: publishers struggle when translating and promoting such publications.

In 2010, three scientific journals of the Russian Academy of Sciences—Region: Economics and Sociology, Bulletin of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Geography and Bulletin of the Russian Geographical Society—proposed to create a joint publication in English named Regional Research of Russia. This journal was founded to familiarize English-speaking readers with the research of Russian scientists in regional economics and spatial development of Russia, Russian regional politics, the development of cities and municipalities, social, demographic and environmental problems in Russian regions, methodologies of regional science and economic geography. We decided that the new periodical would be a digest of articles from the three journals mentioned above. It was a crucial and responsible step that made it possible to publish most interesting articles issued earlier in our scientific journal Region: Economics and Sociology for an international audience.

The Editors-in-Chief of Regional Research of Russia were Members of the RAS A.G. Granberg and V.M. Kotlyakov, leaders of Russian regional science and geography. First Deputy Editor-in-Chief was Prof. S.S. Artobolevskiy, Doctor of Geography. Deputy Editors-in-Chief were V.Ye. Seliverstov, Doctor of Economics; Prof. V.M. Razumovsky, Doctor of Geography; and Prof. Yu.N. Gladky, Doctor of Geography. They represent the journals Region: Economics and Sociology, Bulletin of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Geography and Bulletin of the Russian Geographical Society, respectively.

This scientific journal was first issued in English in January, 2011. Since then, it has been published on a quarterly basis. Regional Research of Russia is published by Pleiades Publishing and MAIK Nauka/Interperiodica and spread via Springer. Unfortunately, in recent years the initiators of the periodical, namely Member of the RAS A.G. Granberg and Doctor of Geography Prof. S.S Artobolevskiy, have passed away. Currently, Editors-in-Chief of the journal are V.M. Kotlyakov, Member of the RAS, and Prof. V.A. Kolosov, Doctor of Geography. Deputy Editors-in-Chief are V.Ye. Seliverstov, Doctor of Economics; O.B. Glezer, Candidate of Geography; and Prof. V.M. Razumovsky, Doctor of Geography. The Editorial Board includes leading Russian and foreign scientists, including those who represent Region: Economics and Sociology: V.V. Kuleshov, Member of the RAS; V.I. Suslov, Corresponding Member of the RAS; and Prof. G.A. Untura, Doctor of Economics. Over the years, more than 70 best articles from the journal Region: Economics and Sociology have been translated into English and published in Regional Research of Russia.

Since 2015, the Journal Regional Research of Russia  has been enlisted in the international Scopus bibliographic database. Articles from all the issues of this journal (since No. 1-2011) are indexed in the database.

Editors of the journal Region: Economics and Sociology highly appreciate this well-established alliance that has made it much more possible for high-quality articles of Russian researchers to enter the international scientific community.
